Research on Design Trends and Collectible Design Influence
Project Concept In 2015, among trend watchers, there was a prevailing notion that life unfolds in a pop-up format—stars rise and fall, each having their moment of fame, often achieved simply by aligning with a set of trendy parameters. At the same time, the key players shaping the interior design market evolve at a much slower pace. Who are these influencers? What are the essential events and locations to visit in order to track the direction of trends in this field? And who curates the most compelling and marketable ideas?
Building on the premise that collectors drive the market, I conducted an in-depth study of the selection processes, mapping connections between collectors, dealers, key locations, events, and designers who define the contemporary interior design landscape with an eye toward the future. This research involved extensive interviews with leading gallery owners from major design capitals, compiling a glossary of emerging innovation terms, and analyzing specialized media and open sources. The study identified five core categories of influence: design dealers, tastemakers, schools, events, and, of course, designers. To validate these findings, I developed a comprehensive guide to Milan Design Week, highlighting locations that consistently ranked at the top of leading publications and were cited throughout the year as trend drivers.
Outcome The result was a practical matrix enabling real-time analysis of the current market landscape and emerging trends. This framework supports dynamic, online monitoring of the interior design industry’s evolving direction. Additionally, I was invited to deliver lectures on this topic at the Breda Academy of Arts and to participate in curating exhibitions for the D come Design Foundation.
